Disaster in Disguise: Tobacco Companies' Environmental Harms

The 2022 Global Media Competition (GMC) organized by the Global Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control (GGTC), a partner of STOP (a global tobacco industry watchdog), seeks compelling social media graphics and short videos portraying tobacco's damaging impact to the environment and how the tobacco industry aggressively hides it by making us believe that it is environmentally conscious.

Tobacco kills 8,000,000 people each year, costing the world’s economy US$1.4 trillion annually. In addition, tobacco is a major disruptor to the ecosystem – from its plastic materials and environmental toxins (aggravated by the fact that cigarette butts are the most littered item on earth) to production processes that lead to deforestation, a leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions.

Through its deceptive messaging, the tobacco industry has perpetuated the problem by diverting attention from its environmental harms by participating in so-called CSR activities to make it seem that they are environmentally friendly, shifting blame to consumers, and drowning out the voices of farmers and workers impacted by its environmental damages.
